I know it's more fun to connect with the University of Freiburg than with the college across town, but local connections put less strain on the Internet backbone.
Download only files you actually need.
If a file looks interesting but you're not entirely sure what it is, download and read the associated
README file. The README file is usually short, and is always a simple text file, so downloading it won't use a lot of time or bandwidth. Once you read it, you'll be able to decide whether to download the file itself.
